Restructuring
New investor continues business operations of KAMEI.
Wolfsburg, 25.1.2024
The two managing directors of Forchheimer Uebler GmbH (Christoph Bülow and Klaus Uebler) are taking over the long-established roof box manufacturer KAMEI GmbH and Co. KG in Wolfsburg im Rahmen einer übertragenden Sanierung mit Wirkung zum 1.April 2024, wie Insolvenzverwalter Justus von Buchwaldt heute mitteilte. The newly established holding company has acquired all the necessary business assets, and the current 23 employees will continue to be employed. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The Company Uebler With approximately 80 employees, the company has been producing high-quality car accessories, especially modern bicycle carrier systems, for 60 years. Customers include numerous retailers and wholesalers in the automotive accessories and bicycle markets, as well as well-known automobile manufacturers. Christoph Bülow and Klaus Uebler are sole shareholders and managing directors. "We are delighted to be able to preserve the traditional business and continue the brand name." “Customers can continue to rely on the usual quality of KAMEI roof boxes,” commented Christoph Bülow.
Insolvency administrator von Buchwaldt, together with his colleague lawyer Nikolas Otto, had continued to run the business in full even after the insolvency proceedings were opened at the beginning of December and had been able to secure an order for a year's production with the most important customer VW. The M&A consultancy he commissioned had contacted over 40 strategic and more than 50 financial investors.
"We have now awarded the contract to the interested party who made the best offer." I am pleased to have found very solid and industry-experienced buyers in Christoph Bülow and Klaus Uebler, the owners of Uebler, who will preserve the brand and secure the remaining jobs.” The management of KAMEI GmbH and Co. KG had filed for insolvency on August 16, 2023, and the responsible district court of Wolfsburg had appointed Justus von Buchwaldt, Partner of the restructuring law firm BBL, as the provisional insolvency administrator for the company's assets.
The Wolfsburg family business in its third Generation was founded in 1952 by Karl Meier, formerly an interior design engineer at VW AG. In 1955, the company founder launched the first "flutter-free protective cover with luggage rack", thus creating the predecessor of today's roof box. Kamei's later hard boxes have received numerous awards, and the brand enjoys corresponding recognition. In 2022, the company, with 42 employees, generated around six million euros in revenue; its largest customer is the Volkswagen group.
The existing subsidiary KAMEI Automotive GmbH, which specializes in accessories for commercial vehicles and government vehicles, will continue to be run by the Meier family.
